The challenge of effective device management in a world of remote working

The proliferation of remote devices and the decentralisation of work have given rise to numerous challenges for businesses. One of the most pressing is remote device security and management.

As team members continue to work remotely, businesses must grapple with how to ensure the security of their networks and data when devices aren’t confined to the office.

The security challenge

Remote device security is a complex challenge for several reasons. Firstly, the physical location of the remote device is often not as secure as those within the corporate office. This may make them more accessible to hackers. Home networks are typically less secure than corporate networks, and some people use personal devices for work purposes.

Businesses are responsible for managing a large and diverse set of devices, each with its own operating system, security configuration, and access controls. This can be especially challenging for small and medium-sized businesses, which may lack the resources and expertise to effectively manage their remote fleets.

One of the key challenges of securing remote devices is the need to apply patches consistently. This is particularly important given many attackers exploit vulnerabilities in outdated software. Businesses must, therefore, ensure that all devices are updated with the latest security patches and application updates. This can be a daunting task.

Another challenge of remote device security is needing to manage access controls. Businesses must ensure only authorised personnel have access to sensitive data and that all data is encrypted during transmission. They must also ensure employees use strong passwords and that two-factor authentication is enforced where possible.

The human element

The challenges of remote device security are not limited to technical considerations, businesses must also consider the human element. This includes educating employees on safe practices and ensuring that they understand the importance of maintaining the security of their remote devices.

To effectively manage remote device security, businesses must adopt a comprehensive approach that includes both technical and non-technical measures. This may include the use of mobile device management (MDM) software to manage and secure all remote devices, as well as the implementation of strict access controls and data encryption policies.

Businesses must also develop clear policies and procedures for remote device security and management, including guidelines for employee behaviour and expectations for device security. This may include regular security training sessions for staff and the establishment of a clear incident response plan in the event of a security breach.

Finally, businesses must also be prepared to adapt to changing threats and challenges. Where and how people work continues to evolve, as does the sophistication and types of cyber threats. Businesses must stay abreast of the current landscape to effectively manage remote devices. This may require ongoing investment in security technologies and personnel, as well as a willingness to adopt or amend policies and procedures as needed.

The challenges associated with remote device security and management are significant and complex, and businesses must take a comprehensive and sustained approach to solve them. With the shift to remote work showing no signs of changing, the time for action is now.
